Facilities Management's Project Management group offers a full range of construction services for renovation and alteration, while ensuring campus buildings are safe, accessible, efficient to maintain, and contribute aesthetically to the campus.
Facilities Management (FM) is sometimes confused with Facilities Design and Construction (FD&C). While FD&C handles large-scale campus planning, building, and alteration projects, FM maintains its structures, including renovations and alterations. Examples of renovation and alteration work include:

- Installing acoustical ceilings
- Changing window or door locations
Electrical:

- Breakers
- Electrical Conduits
- Switches
- Lighting
- Sensors
- Heater controls
Plumbing:
- Rerouting plumbing to hook up commercial washers
- Modernizing or converting kitchens, bathrooms, and laboratories
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC):
- Installing or adjusting HVAC systems
- Removing mounted air conditioners
Other:

- Installing fume hoods
- Installing fire alarms and strobes
- Space planning

Every construction, renovation, alteration, maintenance, or utility change at UCSD — no matter how small — must comply with state and local building codes, University of California and campus policies, handicap access guidelines, and safety regulations, along with environmental mitigation measures required by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
To assist you through this process, our services include:
- Project planning and design
- Cost estimating
- Design review, including all code and CEQA compliance
- ADA compliance evaluation, including landscape
- Contract management, including competitive bid process
- Construction management and inspection
- Construction project closeout and warranty management
- Management for deferred maintenance projects
- Reporting on facilities' conditions
- Archiving documents
To oversee the process, each project is assigned a project manager, who acts as your key contact. To learn more about what the project manager does, see Facilities Management Project Management Group.
If your department has construction needs, see How to Request Building and Landscape Services.
